The Profoundness Of EVITA May Not Be Suitable For Everyone

Hi Huneybees,

After the successful run of West Side Story, Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands has just brought in yet another award-winning but more profound musical production in EVITA to Singapore.

While forty (40) years has passed since this powerful, passionate & political musical was originally opened in 1978, its topics of social snobbery, corruption and autocracy are still very real and visible to many of us today.

15 years old Eva Duarte (later Eva Peron) longing for a better life in Buenos Aires
Set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 1934 and 1952, EVITA tells a real life fairy tale love story coupled with a tragic hand of fate of Eva Peron (played by Emma Kingston), wife of Argentine President Juan Peron and First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952.

Although most of us resonate EVITA with songs such as "Don't Cry For Me Argentina," and "You Must Love Me," made popular by the 1996 movie starring Madonna (as Eva), Jonathan Pryce (as Peron) and Antonio Banderas as (Che), the real success to this original West End and Broadway production, which has won over 20 major awards, is credited to the talented combination of Tim Rice's lyrics, Andrew Lloyd Webber's music and legendary Broadway directorship of Hal Prince.

Che in EVITA is often confused with Che Guevara, the poster boy of revolution
The use of "Che" in EVITA, which is the slang word for "friend" in Spanish, is often mistook as the Cuban Marxist icon himself - Che Guevara - who was also born in Argentina. Perhaps it was a deliberate pun by Hal Prince since Che (played by Earl Gregory) is a narrator, who acts as a voice for the people of Argentina in the musical that is set in a period of inequity, in comparison to the poster boy of revolution.

To all Huneybees who plan to watch this award-winning musical, my suggestion is to go watch it with an open-mind. A quick google on Eva Peron will certainly helps in better understanding and appreciate the fast pace of the biography of this amazing woman, who is today still adored by the masses but at the same time intensely disliked by others.
