(Update: Special Deal) Get Your Dancing Shoes Out For Sister Act

| |
Hi Huneybees,

Whenever you mention Whoopi Goldberg, the image of her dressed as a nun naturally comes to mind. For those younger Z-Gens, Sister Act might not be familiar to you but back in 1992, this musical style movie got us all singing and dancing out of the cinemas and the movie garnered more than over US$231m at the box office!

Sister Act told the story of a diva nightclub singer - Deloris Van Cartier, who took shelter in a nunnery, after witnessing her mobster lover - Curtis Jackson commit a murder. Thinking the nunnery is the last place that the mob will find her, she continued to shine and showcase her singing talent, where she was assigned to "tune" the convent's choir.

She did an amazing job that it even caught the attention of the Vatican, which of course gave her location away when she appeared on TV. After a chase scene around the convent, of course, the bad guys get caught and it all ends with a happy ending.

Well, just like the movie version, the Broadway production version we caught last week at Marina Bay Sands was just as cheery and heart melting, sending us tapping and clapping all the way home.

Featuring a lively musical score by celebrated Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the BeastThe Little Mermaid) and lyrics by his frequent collaborator Glen Slater, Sister Act first opened in Broadway in 2011 after a circuitous route through London’s West End.

The lead role - Deloris is played by Dené Hill. She is as charismatic as Whoopi was, but she also had her little Beyoncé touches on stage, giving us a showcase of her wide range of vocals along with the slew of comical "sister" casts.

But, there was someone else stealing the limelight. It would have to be Sister Mary Robert that's played by Korean actress Sophie Kim So Hyang. Who knew that this petite little frame could belt such sky-high vocals and crush her solo tunes that everyone in the audience couldn't stop clapping for her? Yes, though her pronounciation is not that good, but for someone to reach such high vocals, she definitely deserves those applause.

All in all, it was an amazing songful night with motown tunes, colourful backdrops and costumes, together with hilarious script. I guarantee you will be singing and tapping your feet all the way home. There's just a few more days before Sister Act have to close, so be sure to get your tickets.
